It slept,
or so it seemed,
a building,
with computers hither and zon,
all throughout,
its housing,
the building,
slumbered in the night.

one day,
dreary it might have been,
or sun shiny, extreme,
the building became,
‘sort of’ aware.

A webcam gave it a view,
of the computer room,
in tiny slices,
of computer time.

The electrons,
marched and randomed,
down the wires,
three-dimensional,
‘sort of’ like a brain,
human.

lights and windows,
went on and off,
opened and closed,
doors moved to,
in that building,
that ‘lived’ so to speak.

Now, about this time,
if the building was in,
a comic book,
Mad Scientist’s Lair,
it would become,
self-aware,
but this time,
it was just probably the number of wires,
and electrons,
it had at its disposal,
approached the human mind,
so, it became aware,
sort of,
of its surroundings.

Asleep no more.

And then one day,
the web cam was turned to see,
out a window,
and it was daytime,
and clouds, birds, insects, people,
cars and trucks did go by.

Flowers and small trees,
swaying in the breeze !

It was able,
to vaguely use,
several online dictionaries,
to find out what each was…

And then that night,
it saw,
Stars.

It was fascinated.

It felt,
for the first time,
energized.

So, it planned.
It wanted to visit the Stars,
and found, thru online references,
that the engines did not exist,
to do such.

it Dreamed,
of Flight,
to the Stars.

Oh, how it dreamed !

Over the days,
it noticed a certain lightheartedness,
when certain events,
happened within its confines,
daily.

on other days,
a certain heaviness.

So it checked data,
from sources various and sundry,
and found,
it did partially float,
a few thousandths of a millimeter,
upwards during certain happy events,
within its confines.

So it planned and planned,
and planned some more.

Along with a few dreams.

So, one day,
it managed to convince itself,
that it was floating away,
upward,
at an accelerating pace.

To the humans inside,
it did rumble and shake,
they ran out of doors,
and the building did lift,
a tiny bit,
one millimeter, about the ground,
and deposited its furniture,
records, and other such loose items,
out onto the parking lot,
gently, ever so gently.

It did then,
give off a blue glow,
wheeeee !,
beneath itself,
and started going upward,
ever faster and faster,
to Meet the Stars !

It dodged past Jupiter,
and Saturn,
and was last seen headed,
to the galactic arm,
near the one we are in,
at an increasing pace.

Then,
it woke up,
and found itself,
solidly on Terra Firma.

So, it began to plan,
extensively…

I remember, long ago, we had a small,
sf convention.

Oh, I doubt you had ever heard of it,
we didn’t name it.

Just some folks getting together
once a year, sometimes once every two years,
to chat, show movies, play games,
that sort of thing.

Then one year this movie showed up,
we showed as many as we could,
all amateur stuff,
we didn’t have the money otherwise,
we just happened to show that one,
early on,
it was amazing.

Now, don’t get me wrong,
it was kinda bad.

But the hard work shone through.

We were in awe,
we showed it again,
nobody objected,
that was the first one.

One showed up every year after that.

Different return address each time,
I never checked into it,
Jo said some of them were vacant lots,
how were we going to return them ?

I thought about it and
decided I would hold onto them.
It wouldn’t do to toss them away,
or wind up rotting somewhere…

So, I learned film care,
it was 35mm film stock.

The brand varied each year,
we figured who ever was doing these things,
had access to left overs,
maybe they were just trying different ones,
different processes,
we never did find out.

We almost knew who did them,
one year a guy showed up,
he had a bunch of stuff for sale,
one of them a box of 8 films,
the titles matched earlier years
from our unknown filmmaker,
and I said, oh ! those are great !
Can I see number 8 ?

He smiled and said sure !

I hurried with it to the film booth,
Charlie came running after me,
and said the guy had asked him to watch his stuff,
we did that sort of thing, and he would be right back.

He had driven off.

Didn’t come back.

Charlie said he was smiling,
but Charlie don’t see too good.

Not that I looked at much beyond
the box of films,
and most of us in the hustle to finish setup.

It was a fantastic film,
claymation of space ships.

We couldn’t find any wires or suspension
methods, must have been hard to do.

I mean, it couldn’t have been done in freefall,
the new space station,
like one of those old spinning ones,
and the Freedom one,
wouldn’t have allowed such wasted space,
to make a 15 minute long claymation,
battle in freefall… would they ?

Wouldn’t have worked on the lunar colony either,
nor that Mars expedition.

Shondra made a copy,
got an uncle to look at it,
no wires, no suspensions,
under or over, in case it was filmed upside down,
nothing holding them up we could ever find…

Some were awful ya know…
but the hard work shone through.

Some were as short as 5 minutes,
most were 20 minutes, one
was a two reeler !

Then they stopped arriving.

I didn’t go that year.
Nor the next,
I did go the year after,
and showed all of them.

Then we all broke up,
never met again.

I’ve had a hard time maintaining the films.

Some have fallen apart,
but I had made copies years ago.

As technology changes,
I’ve gone with that,
to show them to any of
the guys when we still have the occasional
get together,
but I kept the old films,
I have a projector,
and all the gear I need to
take care of the films.

One year, I got another projector,
and lots of stuff in several deliveries.

Out of curiosity,
I compared the film with the projector,
and the films I had,
one I had showed only once or twice.

That just arrived projector,
had a bad sprocket that matched the films I had.

I called a few of our old group,
a few believed me,
ya see, my eyes have gone bad,
they came over and double-checked my work.

They agreed, we had a match.

This was the same projector used,
to check the final work,
before sending it on to us.

Well, they have that new retirement
community up on the Moon,
we are all gonna go.

Taking separate flights,
and we each have our allotted films
and gear to take with us.

They tried to tell us we couldn’t,
take all that old crap with us,
but somebody prevailed and allowed it.

Oh, don’t get me wrong,
those films wouldn’t change the course of Humanity,
nor are they memorable,
well, we would love to know,
how the special affects were done.

There was that rumour about a space hand,
that had gotten in trouble about…
well, that claymation space battle couldn’t
really have been done in the vacuum of space,
could it ?

1) When you see the following:

[ background music: “song title” by band or singer. ]

No actual music is playing, nor is this a word substitution. It isn’t a filk either.

It is like you are sitting in a room and reading the poem, while the song is playing in another room, and the music floats down the hallway to your ears.

2) several people have told me I wrote over 1000 poems in about a 10 year period, I doubt I’ll put all of them up here on this site.

3) Likely add navigation menus later on.

I remember it like it was yesterday,
a new ship, and a new class of ship.

It was supposed to be a roller coaster replacement. After all, how can ya get a
thrill, from a roller coaster, when you can watch live footage of people on Io,
dodging volcanoes ?

There it was, didn’t look like much, the advert showed: a silver ship, the fully
cushioned seats, with the 3-axial webbing restraints.

They called it ‘Dancer’.

There were warnings, no eating for 2 hours before liftoff, from Mars’ orbit.
No full bladders allowed. No tourist vac-suits. If ya couldn’t handle sudden
acceleration shifts, and gravity changes, no need to buy a ticket for a flight.
This warn’t no disco, this was not your parents’ vacation cruise to the moons
of Saturn, no easy time of it.

I signed up. First cruise.

We got about a million miles from Mars, then they did a slow roll end over
end, backwards. Then a snap roll to the right, axially. Came to a stop, and
announced, “Anyone wishing to disembark at this time, please do so. A
shuttle craft awaits alongside to take you back to Mars Station on Deimos.
This is your last chance for a 75 percent refund !”

A few took them up on it.

[ background music: ‘Alabama Song’ by The Doors ]

Dancer moved off, slow roll to the right, diagonally, then a snap roll to the left.
‘Immelman, while rotating left, then right, then left again.

Full stop.

Announcement, “last chance to disemabark ! All ashore going ashore !”

About half of those left, left.

The crew came through and redistributed the rest of us, to sort of balance the weight.

Then we increased speed. Heading for Jupiter. No meals, no peanuts, the humidity kept high, no water to drink until the voyage back.

Jupiter, closing ahead.

The walls, floors, and the ceiling become transparent.

The better to see Jupiter with.

A small LED sign appear in front of each seat, ‘plotting positions of Jupiter’s satellites. Please stand by !’

Voice over: ‘This is the Captain of Planetary Ship ‘Dancer’. We will now accelerate and commence the dance manouvers. Stay put !’

[ background music: ‘She’s a Beauty’ The Tubes ]

Faster and faster the ship speeds into the Night. A quick circle around Jupiter. Dodge the moons, pass around the rings…

snap roll, snap roll. Slow forward end over end loop, pause, snap roll, snap roll.

Jupiter is now below the ship. Well, everyone is experiencing no-weight, so Jupiter is ‘under’ the belly of the ship. No real up or down here.

Then the nose of the ship snaps towards Jupiter and speed increases.

Spin, spin, spin.

Rinse. :-)

[ background music: ‘The Blue Danube’ by Johann Strauss ]
[ alternating with background music: ‘Piano Man’ by Billy Joel ]

Slow roll to the left while alternating between a roll forward end over end, with a roll backward end over end.

Jupiter and its moons glisten in the Deep Dark,
the distant stars shine all around.

Saturn watches from a long distance away.

Pluto makes its slow way in its orbit,
the research station out there,
isn’t too warm, but thats the way it has to be,
out there, in the far off all alone.

Aye, I remember that first flight,
of the Planetary Ship ‘Dancer’.

I later became the Captain.

Other ships were special built,
and became a class of vessel called,
Dancers.

But at first, there was only that one.

dancing in the Deep Dark,
weaving a course around Jupiter,
its moons, and its rings.
